Upcoming events

From Ted:

Fellas – I have been in contact with Boost Mobile again and they have invited us again this year to volunteer at their contest at Lower Trestles on the 5th to the 13th. I don’t yet know my schedule but this was a blast last year and they were very good to us. I am also seeking volunteers still for the VA Summer Sports Clinic down in La Jolla Cliffs from the 29th of Sept to the 3rd of Oct. This second event is in support of wounded veterans and our job is to help them learn to surf. Great event and for anyone who has helped me out with this type of event before you know how rewarding it is. Call me at (310) 435-2532 or email me here or my gmail account for info on either event: modernachilles@gmail.com

Word from our VP

Fellas, Myself and some of the other surfers on base helped out at an awesome event last weekend called “Operation Amped.” This event helps recently injured service members learn how to surf. Pictures can be viewed at http://www.flickr.com/photos/joelpix1/sets/72157606535925904/ While at the event I was contacted by the VA to help with another event in September down at La Jolla Shores. This event is called the “National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic” and includes cycling, sailing, track & field, kayaking and of course surfing. The organizers would like us to help as surf instructors and water safety personnel. I can vouch for the fact that it is a ton of fun and a very rewarding experience helping out our fellow wounded warriors. I am hosting a beach barbecue this weekend 09 August 2008 at San Onofre (cabana #4) to get the club members and friends together to discuss how we can help with this event and how we can improve the club. I’ll supply food & beer but feel free to bring anything special you want. Glad to be back off of deployment and back in the water and can’t wait to see you all! Semper Fi, Ted Handler

Trestles Update

I received this from Stefanie with the Surfrider Foundation:

The Department of Commerce announced today the hearing for the TCA’s appeal of the Coastal Commission decision will be held July 24th and/or 25th. As always, it takes some time for government agencies to nail down the exact date, but at least we know it will be July 24th and/or 25th. The hearing will more than likely be at the Bren Event Center of the University of California, Irvine.

We’ll get more details as they come in…. including the exact date, meeting format, agenda, etc… so stay tuned!

Also, we’ll be renting buses again (more than likely leaving from LA and San Diego). So if you are interested in riding the bus, please send an email to: savetrestles@surfrider.org with the subject line: buses to hearing.

We need you at this hearing! Please make sure our Federal Government upholds California laws and decisions.

Remember, in February 2008 the California Coastal Commission voted to deny the toll road through San Onofre State Beach. Following a 14 hour hearing, attended by thousands, the Commission listened to reason and law by rejecting the toll road application.

The people in D.C. need to hear from people who care about San Onofre and Trestles! Your voice is needed!

Don’t let the TCA’s lobbyists be the only influence on this important decision !(remember a few weeks ago when we told you the TCA is spending nearly $50,000 a month on lobbying…?).

We must counter their money with our voices!

For Trestles,

Stefanie

Site Upgraded

I upgraded the website to patch a few security holes.. Don’t worry, we weren’t hacked or anything.. Just better to be safe than sorry. I’m pretty sure I’ve tested everything possible, but again, if you encounter any bugs, let me know.

For some reason, you have to login twice to get the system to log you in.. Not sure why, but I’m sure I miscoded something when trying to get the sidebar login to work… So if you don’t get logged in the first time you try it, try again before resetting your password. I’ll figure it out I’m sure.

Trestles is Saved!!! (Hopefully)

Sorry for the late update… The California Coastal Commission voted 8-2 to reject the planned 241 Toll Road and to protect Trestles and San Onofre State Beach.

Sweet!

Protect Trestles and Get a Surfboard???

Yes, we know…you’ve received several emails from your friends at Surfrider lately…well that’s because we are in the midst of our BIGGEST campaign ever–Save Trestles!
From our friends at the Surfrider Foundation:

As you know, next Wednesday (Feb 6th) the Coastal Commission will decide whether or not the toll road complies with State laws (it doesn’t, by the way). This hearing will be historical–mark our words! We anticipate thousands of people to attend and we hope you are one of them! Trestles really, really needs you there.

Before we launch into the nitty-gritty of how the hearing will work, we want you to know Surfrider is also offering prizes, including two hand-shaped Rusty Preisendorfer surfboards, to attendees who show up in the most creative and original “Save Trestles” themed outfits. Start planning now!

We have space in our bus/carpool. If you are coming from Orange County, email Robin of the Sierra Club, robin.everett@sierraclub.org. If you are in San Diego, emails Stefanie at: SSekich@surfrider.org and indicate if you would like to leave from Ocean Beach or Oceanside.

The hearing will start at 9am and will go all day. If you are not driving with our bus/carpool you can show up whenever you want. However, we’d like people there at 9am; and if you want to testify you need to turn in your speaker slip in the morning.

As you may know, it’s very challenging to know how long the hearing will take. Public hearings can take a few hours, or can go into the night. It’s all speculative. However, even if you can only make it for an hour, that is helpful. The more people we have there the bigger the impression we make on the Commissioners– and at this point, public pressure is key to stopping this toll road.

If you are driving yourself, please note there is a $9 parking fee. However, we will be offering a few supporters (people who sign in at our booth) $5 in cash to help offset parking cost. This will be “on a first come, first served basis” (remember, we’re a nonprofit after all). :)

We greatly appreciate your flexibility and willingness to take time off of work to show your support for Trestles and San Onofre State Park.

You can wear whatever you want–there is no dress code. However if you get there in good time you will receive a complimentary shirt (this will be at the booth check-in).

A Commission hearing is very similar to a court hearing. We need to be respectful and quite. We are not allowed clap or make audible noise. The rules are very strict–and we want to treat the Commission with the same respect we show the Ocean. If you decide to testify, you will get 2 minutes.

When: Wednesday, February 6, 2008. Please arrive by 9am.

Where: Del Mar Fairgrounds–at Wyland Hall. There is a large whale mural on the building 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. Del Mar, CA 92014. Just off the I-5 in Del Mar at Via de la Valle exit. Enter through O’Brien Gate

With a week to go before a critical California Coastal Commission meeting, the Save Trestles campaign scored a big win when President Bush ratified the “Davis Amendment.” The amendment, which was sponsored by Rep. Susan Davis (D – San Diego) and included within the 2008 Defense Authorization Bill, mandates that the toll road project must comply with state environmental law.

The victory comes just 10 days before a hearing by the California Coastal Commission to determine if the project is consistent with California law. According to a report by the Commission’s own staff, the proposed toll road project would violate the California Coastal Act, by irreparably damaging the sensitive San Mateo Creek watershed and surrounding natural and cultural resources.

The February 6th hearing was recently moved from the Oceanside City Council Chambers to the Del Mar Fairgrounds, to accommodate the expected crowd of over 2000 protesters.

“This should serve as a wake-up call for lawmakers and other elected officials throughout the state,” said Surfrider Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer Jim Moriarty. “The populous has spoken; they want our State environmental laws followed not circumvented.”

The Surfrider Foundation, along with environmental partners will be running buses to transport campaign supporters to and from the hearing. Surfrider is also offering prizes, including two hand-shaped Rusty Preisendorfer surfboards, to attendees who show up in the most creative and original “Save Trestles” themed outfits.
